About Us

Lee Kidman welcomes you to Red Dust.

Lee's renowned expertise in turning fine Australian timbers into furniture pieces of the highest quality is based on a lifetime of hands-on manufacturing experience and a family history in timber and furniture which goes back to Australia's gold rush.

It started in 1853 when his maternal great grandfather, William "Kentucky" Platt, arrived from the USA in search of gold. Soon after, he took employment at Blake's sawmills, not far from Ballarat and eventually his sons followed him into the business with operations near Daylesford.

In the early nineteen-hundreds, his children and their families moved to the Upper Yarra region in the Warburton area. Some of the family members operate a timber mill to this day at Yarra junction.

In 1925, Harry Kidman established Kidman Veneer Products in Richmond, making Art deco and high class reproduction dining and bedroom furniture. Soon after he and William Platt's grand-daughter, Ethel, were married.

Lee joined the company at seventeen and, when his father suffered a heart attack, was forced to take over the company when he was just twenty years old. Under Lees management, Kidman Furniture has established an enviable reputation for innovation and manufacturing excellence. Lee has also been a prime mover in helping young people who want to work in the industry and has worked tirelessly to improve the standard of training in Victoria. In 2002,

Lee Kidman retired from Kidman Furniture to launch Red Dust.
